Obama should do the right thing and NOT get a dog?

The Daily Nation, Kenya's leading newspaper, ran an article last Friday suggesting that President-elect Obama “do the right thing” and choose not adopt a dog when he and his family move into the White House next year.

The writer argues that by getting a dog Obama might be encouraging “old-style American extravagance” on pets. Americans spend $41 billion a year on their pets, which is more than the GDP of most African countries and nearly 100 times the amount the Kenyan government spends on health.
