Maverick: Favorite Obama dog name
We know everybody's got an opinion about whether the new First Family should adopt a Labradoodle, a Portuguese Water Dog or a mutt, but what about a name?
The Los Angeles Times blog L.A. Unleashed asked readers to submit their ideas. The winner: Maverick.
The commenter who offered up that nifty suggestion said, "Maverick -- after Tom Cruise's character in 'Top Gun.' Or did you have someone else in mind?" You mean like a certain VP candidate and his former running mate?
Of course, our sister Web site, Dogtime.com, has its own list of possible names for a Labradoodle (we like the name Freedom) or a PWD (how about Anthem?), but we think Maverick is pretty cool, too.
Any other suggestions out there?

I think the name Fighter is also good..

My husband and I both think that the best name for the Obama's new Family/White House dog is JUSTICE!!!
We love that name for the obvious reasons, as well as a couple of our own :-)

I have had two standard poodles--both wonderful dogs--and the first one was named Roscoe, because we thought it was masculine and tough, and we were worried about him being seen as wimpy, because he was a poodle. Of course, he was not wimpy, he was mostly nerdy. If he had been a person, he would have been a chess player. He did not like sports very much.
We now have our second standard poodle named Little Bear, and he is a jock--wants to run and wrestle all day long.
So the first name we chose was intended to cover our own anxiety about having a poodle, and the second name came from our knowledge that when standards are young, and their snoots are coming out, they look like bear cubs.
Plus, one of my favorite books as a child was Maurice Sendak's Little Bear series.
I hope your readers will enjoy a video I've made about the Obama's dog. It's on YouTube, and it's called First Dog Song.
